The loerie awards 2008

Show a little respect!

By: Tshepiso Seopa
The Loeries Awards have come a long way and have grown in leaps and bounds to become the annual industry event. At the still youthful age of 30, this year the Loeries aimed to make mom proud but, unfortunately, there were incidents that definitely must have disappointed her as much as they did the chairman of Draftfcb Nkwenkwe Nkomo.
While the deputy mayor of Margate was delivering his speech at the opening ceremony on Saturday night, 26 July 2008, two creatives went up on stage one kissed him and the other put red underpants on his shoulder as he was speaking.

“It is disgusting that the advertising industry is not showing respect to clients that we do business with. This is the industry that is battling to get a reputation it deserves,” commented a very upset Nkomo, who says he does not want to be guilty of omission for keeping quite.

“The speaker was invited by us (ad industry) to come and talk with us. He is an elected delegate as well as a client of another agency. The actions of the imbecile with the red underwear show how far we have sank as the industry. What really irritates me is that the industry clapped hands when that was happening,” said Nkomo.

“If I had to write an article about this my headline would be a big SIES. This was the 24th time in succession that I have been attending the Loeries and I have never seen something like this before. The problem is not with the venue and not with Andrew Human but with us. Andrew did not say we should do that,” he concluded.
