Broadcasting amendment bill passed

NEWSWATCH: The passing of the controversial Broadcasting Amendment Bill in the National Assembly yesterday, Tuesday, 18 August 2007, means that Government now has the power to fire the entire SABC board, report various media. Meanwhile, the Johannesburg High Court ruled against lifting the suspension of SABC group CEO Dali Mpofu earlier this week.

The Press Council of South Africa, which was formed last year, has also expressed deep concern at the “attacks on media freedom and the judiciary in South Africa”, noting “with alarm several new laws which will severely inhibit media freedom and restrict the public's right to know.”
