Zambia joins in World Tourism Day celebrations

Lusaka: Zambia on Saturday, 27 September 2008 joined the rest of the world in celebrating World Tourism Day.

To make the celebrations different than usual, Zambian Tourism, Environment and Natural Resources acting permanent secretary, Kenneth Nkowani said this year children were the most targeted.

Children from various schools in Lusaka were at the Lusaka International Airport to welcome all visitors coming in Zambia from different areas.

Meanwhile, children expressed their views about the whole event saying it was exciting and interesting.

Nkowani reiterated the need to keep Zambia's natural resources safe.

He said citizens should avoid causing negative practices that effect climate change because this year's theme is "Tourism Responding to Climate Change".

He said things like cutting down of trees can cause harm to the tourism in Zambia because tourists come in to view these same natural resources.

"As future leaders who will carry the heritage of this country forward, I urge our children to have passion for environmental protection and use their scholarly skills to engage in activities that will promote awareness and enhance good stewardship towards the environment," he said, while addressing the pupils at the airport.

Meanwhile, the children were taken on board to view the South African Airways and traditional dances that performed as part of the occasion.
