It is actually called garbology and involves the assessment of individuals' garbage in certain neighbourhoods to identify buying/consumption patterns.
The ultimate link would be to identify purchases and compare these to consumption patterns in set areas - it would probably conclude that about 30% of what we buy we toss out, without using. In less affluent areas this figure would be much lower.
